Editors Note

Dear [firstname]

Wow! My creative juices are still bubbling from a fantastic breakfast session last week. We had memory tests, we had inspiration, we had balls dipped in jam!! Whether you made it or not, I strongly recommend dropping Dr.Detlef an email and getting on his quarterly creative newsletter detlef.r@cmmu.net

This week we will have another treat as Gary Orman takes to the floor to discuss "Living a Successful Life, starting Today". If you caught Gary's talk a few months ago about recruiting you will know this is another speaker not to be missed!

Finally don't forget that every week courtesy of Raja's Fashions we are giving away a tailored Egyptian cotton shirt in a lucky draw! Dress Sharp – Look Sharp – Feel Sharp thanks to Networking for Success!!

See you tomorrow at 7.30am!

Networking Leadership

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Generally in networking there are two types of people. The givers and the takers.

The takers are the kind that put many people off networking. You know when you meet a taker because they are not interested in anything you say or do, they are only interested in how you can benefit them.
Typically these fast talking salesmen don’t last long in networking, they find it really doesn’t work for them and dismiss the people who take time to build relationships as being unfocused.

The other type is the ‘giver’. The giver is oft talked about and lauded in networking literature and circles.
In fact anyone who has ever read anything on networking will be very familiar with the concepts of ‘give to get’ and ‘pay it forward’. The idea being that you need to go out there and look for how you can help other people before you focus on what your own particular needs are. ‘Build your well before you're thirsty’ or ‘build your bridge before you cross it’ are the common refrains of the seasoned networker.

Now, both of these have their drawbacks. As in nature the best partnerships are symbiotic with results that benefit both parties.

Takers, often due to their own insecurities, believe that you have to look after number one. To a certain extent they may actually discover some success by being so direct but the success is short lived because, without reciprocity of sorts, people soon tire of the demands of takers.

Givers, on the other hand, tend to give away a lot up front. Time, contacts, leads etc. Often, although they believe they are doing this magnanimously, there is a hidden expectation of return in there somewhere. If this return is not forthcoming then the giver can turn bitter at the experience and blame either the recipients or the process, in this case, networking.

There is a third way. A ‘leader’ will strive to...

Networking Star of the Month
[firstname], each month we will feature one of our members who we feel deserve a mention. This month we feature Gary Orman!

Gary Orman's depth and breadth of experience spans over twenty years as a business consultant, assisting professionals, SMEs and multinational corporations in UK and Europe. His approach was to improve people's work life through system design, better strategies, re-evaluating core values and advising on work/life balance.

He decided to establish Genggwaa (meaning 'smarter, not harder') primarily to help companies - and entrepreneurs - do better business here. Using psychological and creative thinking approaches, he hopes to assist owners and managers to find effective ways of increasing their business opportunities, possibly through training and education as well as by devising successful business and marketing strategies.

He believes passionately that business is all about people: helping customers in a profitable manner, enabling you and your staff to lead fulfilling lives, and contributing to the world at large. Somewhat spiritual, perhaps, but  grounded in practical, commercial pursuits. And, for him, networking is first and foremost about people helping each other, making friends and finding compatible business partners. (Remember that even customers are partners in a sense.)

His own long-term aspirations are to significantly raise the quality of people's lives through their own endeavours on a global scale. This could range from basic health issues to 'real-world' education, entrepreneurship and the use of appropriate technologies.

Gary is open to opportunities and possibilities. Contact him to chat about your business ideas, to brainstorm, or simply to tell him your goals and aspirations. "I get a buzz out of putting people in touch with each other or contributing to their success," he says, "even if there is no payment involved."

He takes a long-term view. "It's scary to do business this way," he admits, "but occasionally an opportunity comes along which I can help develop into a lucrative revenue stream for the enrichment of all involved. Or at least we have fun trying!"

Whether you have such an opportunity or not, Gary is prepared to contribute freely wherever he can by bringing a distinctive and often unusual perspective to your endeavours.

Contact him on +66(0) 5909 9174 or gary@genggwaa.com or catch him at the next NFS breakfast meeting.
