Liverpool Football Club to buy 30% of Thailand!! Or something like that?! While confusion still reigns on the terms of the deal it has done much to raise the profile of The Kingdom - especially on Merseyside.
Having flirted with being a ‘Boutique’ newsletter last month there is a return to the bog standard newsletter this month. Oh how fickle fashion can be! Although the future, according to the recent DM Thailand 2004 conference, is a move to individually personalised newsletters. It’s a brilliant idea, but don’t hold your breath... it's not on this years 'to do' list.

Party On!

A spot of bother down in the South has meant that there are several great bargains on the Southern islands to be had at the moment although an early preview of the monsoon season may keep you off the beaches.
Koh Samui’s 3rd annual Yachting Regatta was well attended and the action off the water was just as exciting as that on the water (although obviously love of yachts, not the parties, was the primary reason for attending…)
Bangkok’s nightlife is still as confusing to people living here as it is to our visitors. Some places are staying open until 1am, others till 2am. All the nightclubs are absolutely insisting on photo id in order to be let in. Sometimes.
On the plus side, there has a been a boom in early evening happy hours as bar owners try and lure people in early. As if we would fall for that!
Finally, as well as being talked about in football circles, Thailand also won its first film award this month at the Cannes film festival for ‘Tropical Malady’. Yet another testament to the country’s film industry which has had a number of successes this year.

Hiding behind technology

Amongst other things, the recent Direct Marketing Thailand 2004 conference looked at companies increased reliance on technology whilst forgetting the ‘people’ principles that led to their design in the first place.
It seems that Customer Relations Management (CRM) is in danger of doing more harm than good: failing to suitably target customers, abusing private information and offering irrelevant services. A return to the drawing board, starting with the customer experience in mind, seems like a must do for many companies.
Our very own web and email hosting company Netconcept, who have been losing our emails at an exponential rate this month, admitted that their 'Customer Service' team are not allowed to make outbound calls to customers!! I’m sure there is some logic in there somewhere, in the meantime you may want to hold off emailing us for the next few days while we transfer providers.

Mobile Vision

Throwing off the ‘boutique’ label of last month, Mobile Vision launched into May with a veritable whirlwind of activity. The month started with the superbly successful ‘Secrets of Mobile Marketing’ seminar.
An interactive workshop produced many imaginative campaign messages and further emphasised the effectiveness of the mobile medium when done with a little care and attention.

Of course, the Mobile Operators did not attend and continue to spam their customers. Even choosing to double the number of messages they send by doing one in Thai and one in English. Inspired.

Several new products have been developed and are in customer testing at the moment. Major launches are being planned for June and July. Mobile Vision has been sworn to secrecy by one of it's clients, but watch this space as they are planning THE party of the summer to introduce the service to their customers.

Finally, this time next month we will be in the middle of Euro 2004 mania. Keep an eye out, especially in Europe, for the latest mobile services. Many mobile operators and content providers are eagerly awaiting what they hope will be a bonanza of new users as people track their favourite teams and players via the mobile phone.

Anyone that who wants to know more about Mobile Vision and direct marketing can check out Radio Thailand’s ‘Thai Life’ program this Tuesday evening (FM 95.5 and FM 105 Mhz in Thailand). Many thanks to Khun Supan Wiboonma.
